SITEMAP GUIDE

Canonical URLs in XML sitemaps

Canonicals identify a preferred version among duplicate or similar URLs. Sitemaps are most useful when they reinforce that preference rather than pointing at alternatives.

Self-canonical sitemap URLs

A normal indexable page often canonicalizes to itself. That creates a clear relationship between the URL in the sitemap and the page's preferred URL signal.

When the canonical points elsewhere

Do not automatically remove the sitemap URL. First decide whether the canonical target is truly the preferred page. If it is, the sitemap should normally favor that preferred URL; if it is not, the canonical itself may need correction.

Canonical targets that redirect or break

These deserve manual review because the intended preferred URL is unclear. A conservative checker should flag them rather than guessing.
